| Coastal Counties Workforce, Inc. (CCWI) believes that the region’s workforce development system should support the unemployed, those struggling in low-wage jobs, in addition to devoting increased attention to the underemployed. These latter individuals are already active in the workforce, but are in need of retraining to advance or shift career directions. These are the workers who will comprise the largest portion of our workforce in the future. As a matter of fact, 70% of the workforce for the year 2020 is already in place, and many observers have recognized that creative methods to bring about and sustain lifelong learning of the current workforce must become a priority.
Workforce development programs are generally designed to improve the competencies and skill level of workers so that participants can attain economic self-sufficiency and/or a higher socio-economic status. Training and education programs are most often offered by various organizations through contracts with government and/or non-profit agencies. For example, Coastal Counties Workforce, Inc. contracts with three service providers to provide these services in our six county region: The Training Resource Center in Portland (Cumberland County); Coastal Economic Development Corporation in Bath (Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox and Waldo Counties); and the Maine Department of Labor, Bureau of Employment Services (York County). Combined, the three providers administer a seven CareerCenter network offering approximately 65,000 Maine citizens universal access yearly in addition to providing training services to over 2,500 Maine workers. |
